Building Your Work Wardrobe: A Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, there was a young girl who felt rather lost after high school. She tried various part-time jobs and temping. Nothing felt right. Finally, she landed, a little ass-backwards, into a corporate position. Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, with her own underlings and everything. As to not be discovered as the girl who fell ass-backwards into this position of power, she amassed quite the work wardrobe and blended right in.

But it wasn't long before the evil dragon lady broke our young heroine's spirit. At first dejected, the girl realized this was in fact a blessing in disguise. She decided, with nothing else to do with her time and with a little money saved up, to return to her studies. She attended university, learned nothing but how to look down on those who didn't (wasting her money and time in the interim) and found herself right back where she started, albeit a little less young.

Now, on the verge of her re-entry into the workforce, our girl faces her greatest challenge yet... re-building the once grand work wardrobe she wears to infiltrate the corporate world.

Here is her plan of attack.

  4. Haha. Love this. I had a little mental breakdown on Saturday when I was trying to find something "fun" to wear to a wedding and realized I only posses "work clothes."

Love that gray suit. I'm in the hunt for one like that. My staple work look is slacks or a pencil skirt and a cardigan. (and comfortable shoes....no 9" heeels for this professional!!!)

  10. A mini editor?! Fun and genius!

    Great picks and detailed steps!

My style in the professional world has definitely changed since the early days when I was a fresh out of college newbie. (They don't teach you dressing for the part within the other curriculum!) Confession: I wore flip flops, with my dress pants, for the first six months of my first big-girl job. I thought I was being "business casual." ;)

  11. @Leslie: LOL! Hilarious about the flip flops! I wore towering heels because it was all I had other than running shoes. Think J-Lo construction booties from the early 2000s. And you're so right - they don't teach dressing for the part in the curriculum! But they should, right?! ;)
